It should be remembered / noted that initially the first born [from any tribe] were to be Kohaniim; which is why we do pedian haBen ceremony ; and perhaps since it was to be to be tribal neutral that once God moved the priesthood to a subsection of the tribe of Levi that Kohaniim do not have a specific area of Israel when it came to dividing the land. That they ended up living where-ever AND were to be the primary teachers of Judaism [!]

They used to do a rotation from their homes to work in the Temple… [I think it was a two week rotation. Sort of like a baseball pitcher getting to pitch every 5 days]
