There are verses in the torah… that for 21st century mind are tough to wrap oneself around. Mainly the ones with the punishments of burning, stoning to death. One has to try to put themselves in the mindset of the entire outlook of the Books of the Torah. As mentioned before, there are [not a few] Big Ideas/Themes.
That God Exists is number 1. That God is Holy is number 2. 3. That humans are Holy.
If one dwells on the facts as the Torah presents them — that God is What Says It Is, then the punishments on being burned [or] stoning have a place.
Hard to swallow and accept that this is what we pray for 3000 years, and ask to return to the system, but indeed, the question is…
If a person actually believed – truly knew that God was all Encompassing, and Knows, Known, and Will Know… then how does anyone sin in the 1st place?
Well.. it starts with rationalizing to oneself. "Ahh that was back then", "no one is around".
"No one will know".
Many of the sins listed happen in private — only the person knows whether or not the food is tumah… or whether he [or she] is in a state of tameh. When it comes to PUBLIC sins… the daughter of the Kohan who has sex with someone not her husband and the man who says Gods Holy name as a curse… these are public. You go out, people around, warned and STILL do the acts. This is the most outrageous… chutzpan … more it is denying what God Is.
We all sin. 99.99 of us do them in private.
Still bad enough…and our souls get cut off from our people… sort of like little by little poisoning oneself. Just getting sicker and sicker [spirtually]. The actions that led to getting burned or stoned — those are not secret sins. And it seems there are indeed levels to the punishments
Anyway….. be Kodesh, because God is Kodesh. If we aim our lives in this manner…most of us will sin considerably less. May God spare us from our own haughty and plainly incorrect calculations.
