Part Two

As I was writing just now…

It seems that the 5 Books is while not 100% silent on self appraisal, self worth, it is remarkably "quiet". Except in one of the most extreme examples possible – the self appraisal of the 10 (male) spies.

In the rest of the 5 Books, how one views him or herself is again rarely mentioned. Without having the actual books in front of me, there is not another example!

Then we have the Book of Yehoshua.

, now it just came to me, that at the end of Moses life, just before he died, he is told to bless Yehoshua not "just" with similar prophethic ability, but also a dose of "hatzlacha", or "strength" or "encouragement".

Thus Yehoshua needed in addition to Prophecy close to the level of Moses, but also … a hearty slap on the back and "good luck my boy" sending off. It should be noted that Judaism does not seem to believe in luck. But anyway, Yehoshua seems to need t require the extra boost. But does he himself see it that way? How "confident" in himself is Yehoshua? Find out! In the next Book!

Exciting.

Yehoshua Ben Nun, our great warrior… who was able to learn in Moses tent, and lead Am Israel… seemingly according to the story named after him, was not 100% confident. Even with the Ark. Even with God’s promises. He needed a visit from an Angel of God (or God Itself). And, interestingly enough, even though Rachev, who is mentioned living in the walls of Jericho, she makes mention of her peoples view on the matter. She says "we have melted" before the might of the Hebrews (not called Jews). And even though she says that the people themselves were afraid, the Hebrews still did the famous 7 time march around Jericho blowing the shofar.

So, now that is (another) example of self appraisal, self confidence (lack thereof) and again, not having confidence was the city and the people (and the wall) downfall!!!!

Wild.
